Turner preaches new gospel - Chicago Sun-Times

TV mogul Ted Turner declared the Ten Commandments obsolete andsaid he'd pay $500,000 for a happy way to end the world.

'When Moses went up on the mountain, there were no nuclearweapons, there was no poverty,' said Turner. 'Today, the commandmentswouldn't go over. Nobody around likes to be commanded. Commandmentsare out.'

Turner - chairman of the Turner Broadcasting System, creator ofCable News Network and owner of two Atlanta sports teams - spokeThursday in Atlanta before members of the National NewspaperAssociation.

'We're living with outmoded rules,' he said. So he listed rulesof his own, called 'the Ten Voluntary Initiatives' and said theywould have people vowing, among other things, to help thedowntrodden, 'love and respect Planet Earth' and limit their familiesto two children.

Turner also said he wants somebody to come up with a positiveway for the world to end and has been thinking about holding an essaycontest to find the best ending.

'What we've been taught in church and in school is that theworld is going to end in disaster anyway,' he said. 'The world'sgonna be destroyed by fire; not everybody in the world believesthat.' -
